Being a student in junior high and high school is one of the most stressful, fun, messy, beautiful, overwhelming, and joyous experiences in life. Our hope is the information on this page will help a student and their family navigate this 6-year adventure. Don’t forget to celebrate moments and milestones along the journey.

Preparing for College

Following are recommendations per grade level on preparing for academic success and the college admissions process. Each grade level’s recommendations include three areas to help students and families focus on elements that will support their progress.

  1. Guidance: outlines important components in a student’s academic development and provides a checklist for next steps towards college readiness
  2. Testing: lists the standardized tests students will or should take that year
  3. Meetings: outlines student-counselor and student-parent-counselor meetings to discuss a student’s progress and goals
  • Grade 7

Grade 7

GUIDANCE: New Everything

  • Embracing Awkwardness
  • Managing Schedules
  • Collaborating with different Teachers

Grade 9

GUIDANCE: Plan for the Future

  • Conceptualize the importance of a high school transcript
  • Understand what your GPA means
  • Identify strength of courses being taken
  • Attend college fairs
  • Meet college reps
  • Be involved in school activities
  • Volunteer service

TESTING

  • PSAT (October; results typically available first week of December)
  • ACT ASPIRE (April)

MEETINGS

  • Group Advisement Meeting (October); topics include transcripts and GPA
  • Personal Advising Meeting (March)

Grade 10

GUIDANCE: Broaden Your Experiences

  • Become involved and committed to a community service organization or project – or create your own
  • Deepen involvement in several extracurricular activities; this broadens your experience and helps you build relationships with other students and faculty
  • Maximize course choices
  • Keep getting good grades
  • Start making a college list
  • Explore colleges of interest

TESTING

  • PSAT/NMSQT (October)
  • ASPIRE ACT (April)

MEETINGS

  • Group Advisement Meeting (September); topics include college fairs and the PSAT
  • Personal Advising Meeting (February)

Grade 11

GUIDANCE: Test and Inquire

  • College, Career and Calling class (full year)
  • 90% of preparation happens during junior year
  • GPA
  • Compare colleges
  • Take on leadership roles in extracurricular and community service activities
  • Attend college fairs and workshops, and review college catalogs and guides
  • Continue to get to know (and be known by) college reps
  • Visit college campuses during spring and summer breaks
  • Consider summer jobs and volunteer work
  • Search for scholarships (summer prior to senior year)

TESTING

  • PSAT/NMSQT (October)
  • ACT plus writing (February)
  • SAT (January is the best time, December is next best)
  • SAT subject test

MEETINGS

  • Group Advisement Meeting (September); topics include college fair preparation
  • CCC Knowledge Night (December)
  • Personal Advising Meeting (February)

Grade 12

GUIDANCE: Apply, Visit, Confirm, and Celebrate

  • Continue involvement and leadership in extracurricular activities and community service
  • Take/retake ACT/SAT or SAT II tests
  • Attend college fairs and workshops
  • Narrow college choices to three or four colleges, one of which is a “backup” in case the top choices do not work out
  • Apply for admission and establish relationships with admissions counselors at the schools you apply to; DUE October 1 priority
    • Prepare a personal essay
    • Contact teacher/counselors about writing letters of recommendation
    • Fill out a FAFSA form (October)
    • Apply for scholarships (each has its own deadline)
    • Consider admission offers and confirm you intent to enroll
    • Take Advanced Placement Tests
    • Request that a final transcript be mailed to your college of choice

The College Opportunity Trust Fund (COF)
Created by the Colorado Legislature, provides a stipend to eligible undergraduate students. The stipend pays a portion of your total resident tuition when you attend a Colorado public institution or a participating private institution.

FRCS Murri All-In Scholarship

The Samuel J. Murri All-In Scholarship is awarded each year to one FRCS senior entering his/her first year of college. It’s intended for students who are passionate about Jesus and who are not necessarily top academic students.
