How to Talk to Your Kids about Grief and Suicide

Going through loss is never easy; it is even harder when it is unexpected and for reasons difficult to understand. Our community has had its share of grief, and we understand how difficult it can be to process loss or know how to support those who have lost loved ones. Therefore, we provide this list of resources to help you and your family navigate the conversations that come during times of loss or grief. We also touch on some resources specifically related to suicide.

First is this video by Adam Wilson. Adam has been a friend of FRCS for years, having served as a campus counselor for us. He now coordinates and supervises our counseling interns through Denver Seminary. In this video, he provides good suggestions on how to walk through times of loss as a family.

Here is a good article from Focus on the Family that can aid in having helpful conversations with your children about suicide. Focus on the Family also has a resource called Alive to Thrive that deals not only with how to talk with teens about suicide but also how to create an atmosphere around them that aids in preventing suicide and cultivating healthy responses to emotions and life as a whole.

If the need arises for counseling, here a few options for you to consider:

  • Cornerstone Christian Counseling; 303-902-3068
  • Grace Counseling Services; 720-489-8555
  • Southwest Counseling; 303-730-1717

Remember, too, that we have on-campus counseling through our partnership with Denver Seminary (this service resumes once students and faculty return to campus). Information regarding those services can be provided to you at any time by our front office personnel.

Finally, I encourage you to contact your church to see what resources and support they might be able to provide. Local churches are an important part of our community and can come alongside you and your family in valuable ways.

And let us never forget that there is one place from where it must all begin: on our knees in prayer. Our strength, our hope, our victory is found there. Let us not be distracted by the battles before us. Times of loss are when we should remember that we serve a mighty God!

With hope for you and in service to my King,

David Cooper
